Definition:

A surge protector is an electrical device that blocks large amounts of electricity from going through wires all at once, protecting the computer hardware and software from damage.
 
 

Explanation:

A surge is a large amount of electricity that drives through electric cables causing damage to computer hardware and software.  Surges can be caused by lightning strikes or power outages.  A surge protector controls the electrical surges.  It may have several electrical outlets on a single strip into which the computer power cord can be plugged.
