Search Engine

Definition:

A search engine is a tool that finds Web pages in online databases based on terms and criteria specified by the user.

Explanation:

A search engine sends programs out onto the Web to collect the text of Web pages.  The text is stored in the search engine's database.  When you use a search engine, your word or phrase is matched with the text in the search engine's database.  Some examples of search engines are Yahoo, Alta Vista, and Yahooligans.
