Scanner
Definition:

A scanner is an input device used to read text, images, and bar codes and translate them into digital code.

Explanation:

A scanner allows you to transfer written text and pictures from a printed page to your computer screen.  It translates the printed page into the binary code that the computer uses.  Scanners come in different sizes.  Some are hand held and require that you run them slowly over the image.  Others are larger and may look like small copy machines.
