A pixel is also known as a picture element.  It is the smallest element that can be displayed on the computer screen.

Explanation:

A pixel is a dot of light on the screen.  Everything  you see is made up of dots of light.  The picture above has been enlarged to let you see how pixels work.  The more dots per inch (dpi) there are, the clearer the image is.  Pixel gets its name from a combination of the words Picture Element.
