Modem

Definition:

A modem (MOdulator/DEModulator) is a device that links your computer with other computers and information services through telephone lines.

Explanation:

A modem converts a computer's digital information into audio or sound frequencies that can travel over the telephone line.  The modem on the receiving end converts the audio frequencies back into digital impulses that a computer can understand.  A modem dials a telephone number, answers the call, and controls the speed of the transmission.
