Definition:

An icon is an on-screen symbol that represents a program, file, or other computer function, found in Macintosh and Windows applications.

          



Explanation:

Icons are very powerful parts of graphic interface programs such as windows.  They are pictures that represnent software applications, files, folders, discs, and complex computer operations.  These pictures are typically buttons that can be clicked with a mouse to make selections and send instructions to the computer.  Icons make computers much more user friendly and easier to manage.
