Cursor
Definition:

The cursor is the flashing symbol on the computer screen that shows where the information you enter will appear

Explanation:

As you move the cursor around the screen it may change shapes.  Each shape has a different purpose.  When the cursor appears as a blinking vertical line, it tells you where the next character will appear.  When the cursor appears as an "I" (I-beam), clicking in that spot will place the blinking vertical line in that position.  The cursor may also appear as an arrow that "points" to an object or area that you may want to select.
