Mathematicians Are People, Too!
Throughout history mathematicians have sought ways to better explain the world. It is
hard to imagine that the people who have discovered these ideas are real people just like
you and me. By completing this project, you will meet a famous mathematician and share
your discoveries with the class!
- Choose a mathematician from the list.
- Obtain a Mathematician Data Form on which to take
notes.
- Use the following Internet sites to guide you in obtaining your data. You are not
limited to these sites, if you find a better source, please indicate it on your site
bibliography.
http://www-history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/history/BiogIndex.html
http://www.scottlan.edu/lriddle/women/women.html
http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/mathhist/time.html
- Complete the Mathematician Data Form.
- Save a picture of your mathematician on your disk.
- Using your data form, write a report on your mathematician making sure you include all
of the data listed on the form. Your report must either be typed or written in blue or
black ink. You may only use one side of a piece of paper (in other words, do not write on
the back of the paper!)
- Make a visual highlighting your mathematician.
- Prepare an oral presentation summarizing what you have learned about the mathematician.
You will be graded on the following:
- 10 Points Following Directions
- 10 Points Completing the Project on time
- 10 Points Completing the Mathematician Data Form
- 10 Points Including Notes w/ sources
- 20 Points Final Written Copy
