Haiku Poetry

  • Originated in Japan
  • An experience with nature
  • Three lines
  • Unrhymed
  • Seventeen syllables
  • No titles
  • Formal structure
    • Line 1 – five (5) syllables, tells where the poem takes place
    • Line 2 – seven (7) syllables, tells what is happening
    • Line 3 – five (5) syllables, tells when the poem is happening, such as time of day or season of the year
Examples:

 

Snowflakes falling down
In a whirl of dancing glee
Cold ballerinas

 

Drifting overhead
Making shadows on the ground
The clouds swiftly fly.
